Ping Pong is Where it’s at…

15 Oct

I love a kooky little trend. They always baffle me…who kicked it off? Why now? Why not?

A love of leather for Autumn/Winter (practical and with a hit of BDSM, thanks to 50 shades) is expected around this time of year as are florals for spring and safari prints for Cruise collections but these kooky trends that can take hold any time, any where are kind of like a last minute invite to the coolest party in town – you don’t really understand why but you’re definitely going because luckily for you, these trends tend to suit anyone. Cupcakes, bicycles, pop-up shop/restaurants/nailbar sound familiar?

And as one trend phazes out another

b o u n c e s

into the frame.

And the trend bouncing in this time is Table Tennis.

From The Book Club to 93 Feat East, Ping and now Bounce; ping pong is the coolest sports to be playing post Olympics, mainly because we’re all too lazy to try the pole vault and Mo Farrah seems to have that whole 10,000 metres thing sewn up.

Anyway – I headed over to Bounce a couple of weeks ago on a typically, horrendously wet Tuesday to meet a friend for a catch up. Located on High Holborn, Bounce is an easily found just a 5 minute walk from Chancery Lane Station.

Built on the site WHERE TABLE TENNIS WAS INVENTED (super spesh eh!) we were expecting big things when we headed downstairs into the bar and we were not disappointed. 17 tables to choose from, including one that was actually played on in the Olympics, Bounce is where the big boys go to play ping pong.

At the bottom of the first set of stairs you’ll find the main reception where you can purchase your table for the evening. Bookings for groups under 6 are on a first come first serve basis but above that you can book as many or as few tables as you like for £26 per hour. Each table has space around it for bag storage, spectating heckling, downing shots and limbering up in between turns.

Now, I don’t want to disappoint but on this particular eve we opted out of playing table tennis…I know, I know but after roughly 6 months of not seeing each other girl talk was first on the agenda, closely followed by cocktails, then food and then ping pong. So as you can see we really couldn’t fit any quality paddle-time in during this long overdue meet.

What there was time for though, was 50% in the restaurant. show.me.the.menu.

Which I was hoping would have a little more variety than it did, but this was sort of my fault..since it does say on the website they are predominantly a pizza restaurant and it wasn’t really their fault that I wasn’t in the mood for pizza that evening nor was it their fault that I hadn’t chosen to look at their menu on the website  That said they do, do some nice sharing platters and picky bits that would keep you going through a gruelling ‘Round-the-World’ style ping-pong competition, especially when shit is gettin’ SRIUS.

And I know I said I wasn’t in the mood for pizza I did end up ordering one and the pizza I had (a classic bazil, tomato and mozzarella if you must know) was very tasty…as were the Ladies Delight No. 2 Cocktails and the Apples & Pears…and the Wiff Waff and the Ping Pong Show and Gin Lane Spritz…I’m kidding, it was a Tuesday after all!

Unfortunately there were a couple of issues with the waiter bringing us the wrong food…some sliced mozzarella as opposed to a mozzarella pizza (!!!!)  and a few pieces of missing rocket from Bresola, ROCKET and parmesan starter but we were there on a soft launch night (the reason for the 50% off!) ahead of the actual official launch 3 days later. So we will give them the B of the D (benefit of the doubt) and hope they smooth things like this out as I can assume come 6pm on a Thursday and Friday evening, this place will be heaving.

With a dance-floor and private room for hire, complete with private DJ booth, 3 bespoke table tennis tables and even your own bespoke made paddle too Bounce really do deserve to be called the home of ping-pong. Sure to be a great social place to get together with work colleagues, friends, families (there’s no age restriction as far as I know), first dates, team-mates (for those of us taking it seriously enough to have organised one).

Have any of you visited Bounce yet? Or perhaps you prefer Ping? Let me know what you think or this whole table tennis craze!

ANNA DELLA RUSSO FOR H&M

Anna Della Russo for H&M launches on the 4th October and I can’t flinging, flanging wait!

After my previous post on statement necklaces over plain tees I would love to bag me that orange number adorning ADR’s neck but would settle for any number of the pieces on offer and the more the merrier I say! Remember Anna’s Christmas party Commandments?

6. Wearing lots of JEWELLERY.

the sound of JEWELLERY banish
bad thoughts and bad ghosts.

This surely applies to the rest of the year too! Positive vibes and arm candy a plenty! YES ANNA DELLA RUSSO!

So – in-case you hadn’t noticed…it’s raining again.

Yup summer s’long  gone and it’s monsoon season in London and from what I hear, the rest of the UK too. We’ve gone from flip-flops to boats in a matter of a week so it’s a music to my ears that Matthew Williamson has teamed up with Havaiana’s to design some good old Wellington boots in none other that his trademark peacock print (did you notice the clever title to this post, ah, thank-you, thank-you very much!)

Priced at a Hunter-rivalling £85 these wellies will certainly help your splashes look extra swish on the way to work.

Statement T-Shirt…

Last Thursday saw the opening of a brand-spanking new Primark store right opposite Tottenham Court road Tube Station.

And as I previously mentioned, that probably means I will be making more than a few last minute stop-ins en route home from work. Well, it would be rude not too!

After lusting over their cleverly put together Christmas Collection - I was optimistic about what I may find in the newly dubbed ‘posh-version’ of the store.

Even from the outside you can see that Primark have upped their game, the store looks modern and flagship-worthy. With huge floor to ceiling windows and an LED screen. The 4-storey shop is by far the most impressive I’ve seen.

High street giant: The four-storey unit, which is near Tottenham Court Road, covers 82,000 sq ft

Once inside I was pleasantly surprised with how much was catching my eye but in the same breathe how much prices have seemed to go up? Is it me or would you say Primark is now almost on a par with that of New Look or H&M…many of the jumpers I was picking up were around £8-£12, did they used to be cheaper or am I just getting old?

Anyway – so far so tidy, I know the shop had only been open a day but seeing the hoards of shoppers in their I was happy to see that not every item of clothing had been strewn on the floor!

A lap around each floor did however leave me with just a handful of items and those were mainly accessories and the classic socks and pants. I just couldn’t seem to decided if any of the fashion items I was picking up were a little too fast? Galaxy print dresses, sheer shirts, crosses printed t-shirts…I felt I’d seen it all before?

Saying that I did pick up a couple of statement necklaces that will look amazing over a plain t-shirt.

This one in particular has been worn several times already over a plain grey top.

I also have to admit to stealing borrowing this image from Laura over on Secret Diary of a Fashion Journalist - since losing my camera back in June and my phone at SW4 in August I am somewhat at a loss to take my own images…booo!

A steal at £6 (again a little pricier than I remember Primark being), it was exactly what I had been looking for after lusting over images of simple t-shirts and blinging statement necklaces…

Claire Barrow Illustrator Extraordinaire…

23 Sep

Way back in May 2011 whilst raving away at Secret Sundaze, I looked down at the feet of the person next to me and was some-what tripped out by the fact that his shoes had feet all of their own.

Yup. Painted onto the top of his black men’s shoes were a pair of feet, complete with slightly crooked toe.

I loved and hated them all at the same time (who isn’t slightly weirded out by toes?) so, I had to take a picture. They were just too unique to ignore.

And I’m glad I did – because following the picture and a tweet, I found out from stylist Lola Chatterton (remember her and that shoot I helped out on?) that these shoes were actually the handiwork of artist and illustrator Claire Barrow. And Lola herself is lucky to have a couple of designs too –  including a much, much more LOVE than hate, Spice Girls biker jacket which showed up on every twit-feed, instagram & street style blog during last seasons LFW  in February.

That’s the great thing about London and street style in particular – you never know what you’re really looking at, who you’re really talking too and where inspiration can come from.

Anyway – 18 months on from the first spot of those feet shoes and Claire Barrow’s graduation from the University of Westminster, she has gone from painting jackets for friends to commissioned pieces for Rihanna and her Loud tour as well as a collaboration with Joseph (who happen to be launching their UK e-commerce site in t w e n t y f i v e d a y s ! ! ! !). Her designs have been in Vogue and Elle Magazine and most recently, her Joseph pieces have been worn by trampire Kirsten Stewart & love rival Liberty Ross.

Punky, grungy whatever you call it, I love the edge her drawings can give a piece – and that collaboration with Joseph was achingly cool.

RIHANNA IN CLAIRE BARROW

RIHANNA in the hand painted ‘clouds’ jacket

What’s more, this summer saw the launch of her first full collection which was wholly unique.

As part of Fashion East Claire showed 9 looks including a beautiful silk kimono, a paper skirt and 50s wool shirt. All beautifully illustrated or embroidered; the pieces retained the staple punk  favour whilst also referencing a particular alcoholic drink of choice, be it a Bourbon Whisky, Martini or Absinthe & Gin. Which for me further alludes to the idea that this collection is to be worn rebellious and nonchalant. By a drinker, a darer an independent wearer.

I love how well Claire is doing – skipping intern-ships and work placements to do her own thing it’s great to see the effort paying off! Here’s to seeing more of her work in the future!

Just a Little in Love with Cara…

23 Sep

London Fashion Week flew by with it’s usual ferocity and fierceness, showing the rest of the world how trends are started, brands are made and FROW’s are done.

And who was the shining beacon amidst a swash of A/W 2012 baroque blazers and S/S13 Snakeskin & Stripes. Why Cara Delevigne of course.

The brows, the barnet, the blue eyes – her face, for me, is utterly captivating.

From A to B and ASOS to Burberry, Cara has been snapped up to walk for the biggest names in fashion. This year alone she strutted the catwalk for Sass & Bide, Giles, Issa, Acne, Topshop Unique, Mary Katrantzou, Matthew Williamson and of course…Burberry.

CHECK…

But it’s not only her runway reign that has me all in a flap, her editorials and her off-duty style have me girl-crushin’ to the maxXXX.

Cara, and all your kooky coolness – can we be friends?
